Dread is built for readers, not data brokers. This policy explains exactly what we collect, why, and who we share it with. We keep this short because we mean it.

01

Who We Are

Dread is an AI-powered horror fiction iOS application. References to "Dread," "we," "us," or "our" throughout this policy refer to the developer and publisher of the Dread iOS app. For any privacy-related questions, contact us at [email protected].

02

Information We Collect

We collect the minimum necessary to deliver the service.

Account information. If you create an account, we collect your email address and an encrypted password. Accounts are optional — you can use the free tier without one.

Preferences. Your selected horror subgenres and intensity level are stored to personalize story generation. This data lives in your account or locally on your device.

Story data. Stories you generate, bookmark, or rate are stored in your account so they persist across devices. Stories are original AI-generated content and do not contain personal information about you.

Usage data. We collect anonymous usage events — which screens you visit, how many stories you generate, whether you complete a story. This data is used to improve the app and never linked to your identity without your consent.

Device data. Standard device metadata (iOS version, device model, locale) is collected for crash reporting and compatibility purposes.

Purchase data. If you subscribe to Dread Premium, your subscription is managed through Apple and RevenueCat. We do not receive or store your payment details. We receive only your subscription status and entitlement.

03

AI-Generated Content

Stories are generated using the Claude API by Anthropic. When you request a story, we send your selected preferences (subgenres, intensity) to Claude's API. We do not send your name, email, or any personally identifying information to Anthropic's API.

All generated stories are original fiction. Any resemblance to existing works is coincidental. We maintain generation logs (timestamp, model version, story category, originality score) for quality assurance and copyright safety purposes. These logs do not contain the full story text after 30 days.

Cover images are generated via third-party image generation APIs using text prompts derived from the story. No personal data is included in image generation requests.

04

Third-Party Services

We use a small set of trusted third-party services to operate Dread. Each has its own privacy practices:

We do not sell your data to any third party. We do not run advertising within Dread and never will.

05

Data Retention

Account data is retained for as long as your account is active. Story data is retained for as long as you have an account. Anonymous usage analytics are retained for 12 months. Generation logs (metadata only, no story text) are retained for 90 days.

If you delete your account from within the app, all account-linked data is deleted within 30 days. Anonymous analytics data, by its nature, cannot be retroactively linked to you or deleted.

06

Your Rights

Depending on where you are located, you may have the right to access, correct, port, or delete the personal data we hold about you. You can:

We will respond to verifiable data requests within 30 days.

07

Children's Privacy

Dread is rated 17+ on the App Store due to horror content. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 17. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal data, contact us immediately at [email protected].

08

Security

We use industry-standard security measures: TLS encryption in transit, AES-256 encryption at rest via Supabase, and row-level security policies that ensure users can only access their own data. We do not store payment credentials of any kind.

No system is perfectly secure. In the event of a breach that affects your personal data, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

09

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We will notify you of material changes via an in-app notice or email (if you have an account). The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of Dread after a policy change constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
